A Horse of A Different Color

February-2011-Feature-car_m

Nope, not this time. Husband and wife team, Tim and Michelle Fitzgerald decided to put a couple of 1967 Mustangs into their corral. One is a Sport Sprint convertible and the other is a GTA fastback, both came from the factory with Fords “Candy Apple Red” paint and both are still wearing it today.

Michelle found her convertible last winter in Pennsylvania. Sure of what she wanted, she and a good friend and Mustang guru Dave Walter flew out to PA to view and purchase the car she had found online. Her “want list” on the car had to be complete. It had to be a 1967 Mustang convertible with factory “Candy Apple Red” paint, a V-8 engine with a automatic transmission and black interior. Upon inspection of the car, it turned out to be a rare Sport Sprint model with the original numbers matching drivetrain. All the tags and numbers were clearly visible, the car drove well and everything seemed to work like it was supposed too. It came with the original owner’s manual and only had 77,000 actual miles. The original owner sold it to a family friend (Skip in PA) and Michelle bought the car from him. The previous owner had already started restoration on the car by having the underbody of the car redone by a professional Mustang restoration shop, along with most of the interior and some new chrome parts that had been in need of replacement. Michelle had the car transported home and has already got a great start on finishing the restoration that had been started back in PA. Michelle say’s the car will be sporting some new sheet metal and a beautiful new “Candy Apple Red” paint job this coming summer…can’t wait to see it Michelle!

Tim, currently the owner of a restored Dusk Blue (1969 Camaro Rally-Sport Convertible) had always admired the 1967 Mustang fastback body styling; his all time favorite car had been a 1967 Shelby Fastback. Back in January while looking on Craigslist, he happened upon an ad for a 1967 Mustang GTA Fastback for sale right here in the twin cities. Finding a real GT fastback nowadays is like finding a “needle in a haystack” and Tim wasn’t going to let this one get away. He called once again on his mustang friend Dave to drive with him to South Minneapolis and check it out. The car was sitting outside under a foot of fresh snow that had fallen a few days before but stood out proudly with its bright factory "Candy Apple Red" paint (yes the same color as the wife's car). The owner's ex-wife had moved the car outside so she could get "her stuff" out of the garage and left the car in the driveway next to the alley (I know nice of her not to put the car back in the garage). Anyways, the car had all of its GT equipment and was still wearing the correct stripes and GTA badging, but we were not sure without documentation that it was the "real deal". The owner (Tony) had owned the Mustang for 15 years and always believed the car to be a real GT, but never had any documentation to prove it.

We agreed on a safe price for the car in case it happened to be a clone and drove it home that day on the wintery roads of Minnesota in January with the factory positraction rearend and all.Tim was very curious to find out if this car was a real GT from the factory, so he sent in for a Marti report to prove its pedigree once and for all. Guess what? It's a real GT and also has the original matching drivetrain to boot!

To find this car that had been sold new at Southdale Ford in Edina, Minnesota still residing in the twin cities is amazing and will be brought back to it’s former glory once again.

Tim, being the good husband that he is, agreed with his wife Michelle (a lover of classic cars also and yes he knows that he is lucky to have her) to wait in line to restore his Mustang until after her convertible is completed this summer. Watch for this classic pair of “Candy Apple Red” Mustangs to come back to life in a future ACCS article to come!
